After a tour in the U.S. Navy during WWII and graduating from the University of Louisville, Frank H. Arnold, Sr. founded Prudential Heating and Air Conditioning Company on August 1, 1947. Located at 609 S. 3rd Street, Prudential humbly began with a part-time bookkeeper, two mechanics, and one truck. Mr. Arnold believed that by providing quality products combined with a hard-working and honest work ethic, Prudential could become a reliable, service-oriented company for homeowners and businesses in Greater Louisville and Southern Indiana. Prudential and its employees struggled for a few years trying to build a reputation and earn customer loyalty. With positive attitudes, hard work and dedication, Prudential slowly grew and began serving a larger customer base. In 1954, Prudential began using quality Lennox® products to provide only the best for its customers. Even today, Prudential is a loyal Lennox® dealer. Soon the company grew and moved to 820 W. Market Street and then again to 305 E. Southern Heights. Frank Arnold believed that promoting growth would allow Prudential to continue to serve customers at the highest level possible. Prudential moved locations once again to 4724 Allmond Avenue to further facilitate the needs of its customers. Today, Prudential operates a 25,000 square foot office building at 3302 Gilmore Industrial Boulevard including a fully-stocked warehouse and custom sheet metal fabrication shop. Many companies have come and gone, but Prudential has stood the test of time and has consistently proven that it is the premier heating and air conditioning company in Louisville. We have been recognized many times by various respected authorities within the industry and have also received many awards. We offer a wide variety of products and services to meet any need that you may have. Ultimately, we want to provide what you want. We will help you understand what we offer, but your unique home will require what fits best for you and your family. Our service department, installation department, and maintenance program have all been designed with our customers in mind to create a pleasant experience that leaves you feeling comfortable and satisfied. When you place your trust in Prudential, we take that responsibility very seriously. We provide you with the peace of mind to know that all of your heating and cooling needs will be met with Prudential. Here is what you can expect from Prudential:   <h2>From a Prudential Service Call:</h2> 24 HOUR SERVICE It's easy for a company to say they offer 24-hour service, but as well all know, saying and doing are completely different.  At Prudential we always have a minimum of three technicians on call 24 hours a day.  Give us a call when you need us the most, we'll answer!  PROMPT, CONVENIENT SERVICE We realize your time is extremely valuable.  We will schedule a time in advance to perform your service at a time that is convenient for you.  Prudential maintains over 20 service technicians so that we can serve your heating and cooling needs in a timely fashion.  Our regular service hours are 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday through Friday.  We are also available after regular hours and on weekends to ensure your comfort.  NO SURPRISES Our service dispatcher will call you to inform you when a qualified service technician is on his way.  Our technicians drive marked Prudential vans and wear Prudential uniforms so you will always know who is coming into your home.  Our trucks are equipped with GPS devices to ensure a technician can get to your home as quickly as possible. TRAINED PROFESSIONALS Many of our employees have been with Prudential for many years.  We provide ongoing training and maintain an apprentice program to ensure our technicians provide you with only the most quality work.  We do this so our technicians can work efficiently and fix the problem correctly - the first time!  We do not use subcontractors, so all persons representing Prudential will be actual Prudential employees and provide you with the quality work that you can expect. CLEANLINESS Our service technicians wear clean uniforms and shoe covers and use drop cloths, when necessary, to keep your home clean.  The service will be performed in a neat and workmanlike manner.  We feel as though your home should be cleaner when we leave than when we arrived.  We'll treat your home as if it were our own. COMMUNICATION When he is finished, the technician will go over an invoice with you to explain what he did as well as go over any additional questions or concerns that you may have. This is a great time to ask questions about our maintenance program or indoor air quality products that can make your home more comfortable. We will keep a copy of your invoice in a file to maintain a maintenance record that is specific to you and your equipment. OUR PROMISE "Our Job Is Not Complete Until You Are Completely Satisfied!" We say this because we mean it. If you are not satisfied with your Prudential experience, we need to hear about it. We'll do whatever is necessary to take care of you and all of your heating and cooling needs.   <h2>From a Prudential Installation (New Construction or Replacement):</h2> ADVANCED SCHEDULING, PROMPT ARRIVAL Your job will be scheduled in advance and the Prudential crew will be on your job when promised.  We will schedule a time that is convenient for you.  All of the communication from the company will run through one person, our installation scheduler.  This provides for less confusion and more efficient operation. ACCURACY An installation supervisor will check your job before the crew arrives to ensure accuracy and make sure the proper materials needed to complete your job are available.  Customer fabricated sheet metal fittings will be manufactured in our fabrication shop specifically for your job - nothing is done "off the rack" and then made to fit.  Supervisors will monitor progress throughout your installation to ensure time and cost budgets are met. PROFESSIONALISM A licensed, insured, and trained Prudential crew will always be on your job. We do not use subcontractors, whereby assuring our complete control over your custom job.  The technicians will install your heating and cooling system professionally as if they were installing it in their own home.  After your job is completed, our mechanic will fill out an “Installation Quality Start-Up Checklist.” This information will be maintained in your file. According to the EPA, geothermal systems are the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean, and cost effective space conditioning systems available today.  Extremely high levels of efficiency are possible because a geothermal heat pump only uses electricity to move heat, not produce it.  Geothermal systems transfer heat from your home to the earth in the cooling mode, or from the earth to your home in the heating mode.  Water is used as the heat transfer medium through a closed loop piping system buried in the ground.  By using this stable thermal source, geothermal heat pumps provide energy efficienct comfort year-round.  Over the years, geothermal systems have been the leader in low operating costs.  Recently, however, natural gas prices have begun increasing at a much higher rate than electricity.  The U.S. Department of Energy predicts that electricity prices will remain stable over the next twenty years, allowing some increase for inflation.   Geothermal heat pumps qualify for a tax credit worth 30% of the installed cost.  <a href="/site/tips-and-tools/tax-credits.html">Click here</a> to learn more about this tax credit! A geothermal or "ground source" heat pump is an electrically-powered device that used the natural heat storage ability of the earth and/or the earth's groundwater to heat and cool your home.   How does it work? Like any type of heat pump, it simply moves heat energy from one place to another.   The geothermal heat pump removes heat energy stored in the earth and/or earth's groundwater and transfers it to the home.    How is heat transferred between the earth and the home? The earth has the ability to absorb and store heat energy.  To use that stored energy, heat is extracted from the earth through a liquid medium and is pumped to the heat pump heat exchanger.  There, the heat is used to heat your home.  In summer, the process is revered and indoor heat is extracted from your home and transferred to the earth through the liquid.    You mentioned heating and cooling.  Does it do both? One of the things that makes a heat pump so versatile is its ability to be a heating and cooling system in one.  You can change from one mode to another with a simple flick of a switch on your indoor thermostat.    Is this new technology? No, in fact the idea to bury pipe in the ground to gather heat energy began in the 1940s.  But it's only been in the last twenty-five years that new heat pump designs have been combined to make geothermal heat pumps the most efficient heating and cooling systems available.   Where is the loop located? That depends on land availability and terrain.  Closed-loops are trenched horizontally in yards adjacent to the home if the yard is large enough.  Or, for smaller yards, the loops can be installed vertically using a drill rig, much like a water well installation.   How deep and long will the trenches be? Trenches are normally four to six feet deep.  One of the advantages of a horizontal loop system is being able to lay the trenches according to the shape of the land.  As a rule of thumb, 125 to 300 feet of trench are required per ton of heat pump capacity.   How many pipes are in a trench? Anywhere from 1 to 6 pipes per trench may be used depending upon the optimal design for the yard.  More pipe per trench shortens the total amount of trench required.   What about vertical loops? Holes are bored to about 150 to 300 feet per ton of heat pump capacity.  U-shaped loops of pipe are inserted in the holes.  The holes are then filled with a grout sealing solution.   How long will the loop pipe last? Properly installed, these pipes will last over 50 years.  They are inert to chemicals normally found in soul and have good heat conducting properties.    How efficient is a geothermal heat pump? Geothermal heat pumps are 3.5 to 5 times as efficient as the most efficient gas furnace.  Instead of burning a combustible fuel to make heat, they simply move heat that already exists.  By doing so, they provide 3.5 to 5 units of energy for every unit used to power the heat pump system.    What does a system like this cost? Fact:  R-410A has been around since the early 1990s, with the first commercial unit sold in 1996.    Myth:  R-410A is expensive, and people don't want to use it until the costs come down. AFUE Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is a measure of your furnace’s heating efficiency. The higher the AFUE percentage, the more efficient the furnace. The minimum percentage established by the DOE for furnaces is 78%. AIRFLOW The distribution or movement of air. AIR HANDLER The indoor part of an air conditioner or heat pump that moves cooled or heated air throughout the ductwork of your home. BIOAEROSOLS Microscopic living organisms suspended in the air that grow and multiply in warm, humid places. CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM System in which air is treated at a central location and distributed to and from rooms by one or more fans and a series of ducts. COMPRESSOR The part of the outdoor air conditioner or heat pump that compresses and pumps refrigerant to meet household cooling requirements. Controlled by the thermostat, a compressor is the “heart” of an air conditioning system. It acts as a pump, causing the refrigerant to flow through the system. Its job is to draw in a low-pressure, low-temperature, refrigerant in a gaseous state and by compressing this gas, raise the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. This high-pressure, high-temperature gas then flows to the condenser coil. CONDENSER COIL The outdoor portion of an air conditioner or heat pump that either releases or collects heat, depending on the time of the year. It consists of a series of piping with a fan that draws outside air across the coil. As the refrigerant passes through the condenser coil and the cooler outside air passes across the coil, the air absorbs heat from the refrigerant which causes the refrigerant to condense from a gas to a liquid state. The high-pressure, high-temperature liquid then reaches the expansion valve. DAMPER A moveable plate, located in the ductwork that regulates airflow. Dampers are used to direct air to the areas that need it most. Typically used in a zoning application. dB A decibel is a unit used to measure the relative intensity of sound. DOE The Department of Energy is a federal agency responsible for setting industry efficiency standards and monitoring the consumption of energy sources. DUAL FUEL A comfort system that pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace, providing an energy-efficient alternative to the conventional furnace/air conditioner combination. DUCTWORK The method by which air is channeled from the furnace or the blower coil throughout your home. ENERGY STAR The EPA develops and enforces federal environmental regulations. The EPA oversees the nationwide ENERGY STAR program. EPA The Environmental Protection Agency is a U.S. government organization created to protect human health and the environment EVAPORATOR COIL A series of piping connected to a furnace or air handler that blows indoor air across it, causing the coil to absorb heat from the air. The cooled air is then delivered to the house through the ducts. The refrigerant then flows back to the compressor where the cycle starts over again. EXPANSION VALVE The “brain” of your air conditioning system. By sensing the temperature of the evaporator, or cooling coil, it allows liquid to pass through a very small orifice, which causes the refrigerant to expand to a low-pressure, low-temperature gas. This “cold” refrigerant flows to the evaporator coil. FLUE A flue is a duct or pipe used to exhaust gas to the outdoors. HEAT EXCHANGER Located in the furnace, the heat exchanger transfers heat to the surrounding air, which is then pumped throughout the home. HEAT PUMP A heat pump is an HVAC unit that heats or cools by moving heat. During the winter, a heat pump draws heat from outdoor air and circulates it through your home’s air ducts. In the summer, it reverses the process and removes heat from your house and releases it outdoors. HSPF The Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is the heating efficiency rating for heat pumps. The higher the rating, the more efficient the heat pump. HSPF is regulated at 7.7. HUMIDIFIER An indoor air quality device that introduces moisture to heated air as it passes from the furnace into the ductwork for distribution throughout the home. We will explain what a heat pump is, how your equipment works, energy ratings, new refrigerant, as well as various other topics that tend to be confusing to homeowners. <h2>How does an air conditioner work?</h2> Air conditioning includes both the cooling and heating of air. It also cleans the air and controls moisture levels. An air conditioner is able to cool a building because it removes heat from the indoor air and transfers it outdoors. A chemical refrigerant in the system absorbs the unwanted heat and pumps it through a system of piping to the outside coil. The fan, located in the outside unit, blows outside air over the hot coil, transferring heat from the refrigerant to the outdoor air. Your air conditioning system has four mechanical components – a compressor, an expansion valve, an evaporator coil and blower, and a chemical refrigerant. A central air conditioning unit operates by means of a split system. That is, it consists of a “hot” side, or the condensing unit – including the condensing coil, the compressor, and the fan – which is situated outside your home, and a “cold” side that is located inside your home. The cold side consists of an expansion valve and a cold coil, and it is usually mounted on your furnace or air handler. The furnace blows air through an evaporator coil, which cools the air. Then this cool air is routed throughout your home by means of your duct work. For more information on the compressor, condenser coil, expansion valve, and evaporator coil, see our HVAC terms. <h2>A bigger air conditioner will cool my home better, right?</h2> Wrong! When considering the purchase of a new air conditioner for your home or office, consider the fact that today’s best air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling than air conditioners from the mid-80’s. A larger air conditioner will not necessarily provide the best cooling. Many companies will not spend the time to accurately size your equipment, but it is absolutely critical. A larger air conditioner costs more initially. It will cycle on-and-off more frequently which will drastically lower efficiency. Frequent cycling also causes large temperature swings which decrease your comfort. In humid areas such as the Ohio River Valley, moisture removal is critical. Excessive cycling reduces moisture removal and wears out parts and components much more quickly. When all of these factors are combined, it means more electricity usage and shorter equipment life, which costs you more money. <h2>What are the benefits of two-stage cooling?</h2> Two-stage cooling means the air conditioner or heat pump has a compressor with two levels of operation: high for hot summer days and low for milder days. Since the low setting is adequate to meet household cooling demands 80% of the time, a two-stage unit runs for longer periods and produces more even temperatures. Longer cooling cycles also translate to quieter more efficient operation and enhanced humidity control. As an added benefit, many two-stage compressors use the new R410A refrigerant, which meets US government standard for environmental safety. <h2>When replacing the outdoor unit of an air conditioner or heat pump, should the indoor unit also be replaced?</h2> We highly recommend it; here are the reasons why! All outdoor air conditioning and heat pump units are specifically designed to work with matched indoor units for optimum efficiency and performance. While new air conditioner or heat pump units may “work” with your existing indoor unit, the result is a definite compromise in system performance. The cooling and/or heating efficiency ratings that are advertised for an air conditioner or heat pump are based on their performance as part of a matched system. Longer equipment life will likely also result because all components operate as they we designed to. At first glance, replacing only the outdoor unit may appear to be a bargain, but decreased efficiency and reliability is not such a bargain after all. Replacing an entire air conditioning or heat pump system costs more initially, but you get more efficiency, reliability, and comfort in the long run. <h2>Should I be concerned about the new energy efficiency standards?</h2> Federal regulation has raised the energy efficiency standards for air conditioners and heat pumps. A minimum of 13 SEER is required for air conditioners and 13 SEER/7.7 HSPF for heat pumps. Previously, ratings were only required to meet 10 SEER. This increase in energy efficiency creates significant environmental benefits as well as important economic benefits. For example, when compared with older, less efficient equipment, air conditioners and heat pumps with higher SEER ratings can save you hundreds of dollars each year on your utility bills. <h2>What can you tell me about air conditioning refrigerants?</h2> Refrigerants are what make air conditioning possible. Contained within the coils of your system, these agents make it possible to cool and dehumidify indoor air. Today, there are several types of refrigerants used in air conditioning systems. The most common is R22, which will be phased out over the coming years in response to international environmental concerns. Though the transition away from R22 is just beginning, Prudential and Lennox are one step ahead by offering a full line of products that use a more responsible, chlorine-free refrigerant, R410A. R410A is better suited for use in higher-efficiency equipment because you get a higher heat transfer rate than with R22. <h2>How does a furnace work?</h2> A furnace works by drawing air inside a heat exchanger, where it is warmed with a flame of natural gas. A blower sends the warm air through the house via your metal ducts. It enters the room through a register in the floor or wall. Indoor air is circulated continuously through the system, so a furnace filter is used to contain dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. <h2>What is a heat pump and how does it work?</h2> A heat pump is an efficient method of cooling your home in the summer and warming it in the winter. It works by moving existing heat from one area to another. A condenser absorbs heat from the outdoor air (even the coldest air contains some heat) and transfers it to an indoor coil.  During the summer, the process is reversed to cool and dehumidify your home. One advantage of a heat pump is that it provides both heating and cooling capabilities in one unit. Like a furnace, they use filters to reduce airborne particles and keep the unit clean. <h2>What is a dual fuel system?</h2> A dual fuel system combines your electric heat pump with your indoor gas furnace to share the heating load of your home. Each system will operate when it is the most cost effective heating method. In the summer, your heat pump will cool your home. It will also serve as your primary heat source in the winter. However, when the temperature drops below the heat pump’s set point, your furnace will take over until the outdoor temperature rises enough for your heat pump to operate more efficiently again. <h2>What is a variable speed furnace or air handler?</h2> Inside your furnace or air handler is an electric motor that drives the indoor blower. In most standard systems, it runs at only one speed – full capacity – and is either on or off. A variable speed motor, however, automatically varies its speed based on your home’s heating and cooling requirements. It ramps up to maximum speed slowly instead of coming on full throttle all at once. This means no more sudden blasts of air – just a gentler, more even airflow. Also, since it runs as a lower speed most of the time, there is a lot less noise and cost to operate. <h2>What are furnace energy ratings?</h2> Furnaces are rated by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratio, which is the percent of heat produced for every dollar of fuel consumed. AFUE works a lot like the miles-per-gallon rating on your car – the higher the rating, the lower your fuel costs. All furnaces manufactured today must have an AFUE ratio of at least 78%. If your furnace is 10-15 years old, it very well may fall below the current furnace minimum and waste energy. <h2>What’s the advantage of two-stage heating?</h2> Traditional furnaces are designed to operate only at one level – high. No matter what the temperature is outside, they run at full capacity. Furnaces with advanced two-stage technology make the distinction between mild and extreme weather, delivering the level of heating output necessary to maintain optimal comfort conditions inside your home. The first stage operates the furnace at about 68% of its heating capacity. Your furnace will adjust automatically should the outdoor temperature drop and switch to the second stage to meet the comfort demands of your home. It’s like having two furnaces for the price of one, and you don’t have the hassle of constantly adjusting your thermostat. A two-stage furnace can provide optimal comfort within your home, despite the changing weather conditions outside. If you want and expect high-level performance from your home comfort equipment, then a Lennox two-stage furnace is the right choice for you. <h2>Why should I zone my house?</h2> To keep all areas of your home comfortable, no matter what the weather! No longer must you have hot or cold rooms, or pay to heat or cool areas of your home that you rarely use. According to the EPA, if just one in ten households installed ENERGY STAR heating and cooling products, the change would keep more than 17 billion pounds of pollution out of the air. <h2>What are the 90%+ AFUE Gas Furnaces?</h2> (The G71P, G61V, G61, G51, G43 models) These furnaces have an AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating greater than 90%. That means that you will receive more than 90 cents of heat for every dollar that you spend on gas. They are all condensing furnaces which means there is water in the flue gases. In all cases the flue gases must be exhausted through a white plastic (PVC) pipe, typically to the side or rear of the house. This type of furnace should show average savings of 25% to 40% depending on the type of furnace you are replacing. A homeowner with a large old house, high gas bills, or one who plans on being in the home at least 10 years is a good candidate for one of the 90%+ furnaces. With lifetime warranties on the heat exchanger (with the exception of the G43 which has a 20 year warranty), they are units that will provide years of dependable satisfaction. <h2>What are the 80%+ AFUE Gas Furnaces?</h2> (The G60V, G60, G50, G40 models) The AFUE on these furnaces is 80%. The flue gases exhaust at a higher temperature than the 90% furnace, therefore it can be vented through most chimneys. However, in many houses a metal flexible liner must be pulled through your existing chimney. This protects against the flue gases cooling and condensing in the chimney. The water would then seep back into the home and do damage to the plaster. A homeowner with a small house and small gas bills, or someone who is not going to live in the home for more than 5 years would likely choose this model. These models carry a 20 year limited warranty on the heat exchanger and will provide average savings of 15% to 25% depending on the type and age of furnace you are replacing. <h2>Why is ventilation important for proper indoor air quality?</h2> We were once able to achieve natural ventilation in our homes by merely opening a window. However, with the concern for energy efficiency, we have been busy making homes “tighter” from an energy standpoint. With HRV’s (heat recovery ventilators) and ERV’s (energy recovery ventilators), air can be circulated throughout your home using your existing forced air system. Bringing fresh air into your home could help reduce concentrations of indoor contaminants. With these innovative products, you can get fresh air and still maintain energy efficiency in your home. <h2>High Efficiency Tax Credits</h2> On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed a stimulus bill (The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) that made some significant changes to the energy efficiency tax credits.  Included in this bill: <ul> <li>The tax credits previously effective for 2009, have been extended to 2010 as well.</li> <li>The tax credit has been raised from 10% to 30% of the installed cost.</li> <li>The tax credits that were for a specific amount (ex: $300 for an air conditioner) have been converted to 30% of the installed cost.</li> <li>The maximum credit has been raised from $500 to $1,500 for the two years (2009-2010).  Some improvements such as solar panels and geothermal designs are not subject to the $1,500 limit.  Prudential is now offering the industry's first solar-assisted central heat pump as well as geothermal heat pumps.  </li> <li>We offer a variety of heating and cooling products that will qualify you for these tax credits.  Call us today!</li> </ul> <h2> </h2> <h2>Geothermal Tax Credit</h2> In October 2008, geothermal heat pumps were added to section 25D of the Internal Revenue Code, which provides a 30% tax credit for spending on qualified property placed in service through the end of 2016.  The credit was made retroactive to the beginning of 2008, and was capped at $2,000.  In February 2009, the $2,000 cap was removed for property placed in service after December 31, 2008. AFUE Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is a measure of your furnace’s heating efficiency. The higher the AFUE percentage, the more efficient the furnace. The minimum percentage established by the DOE for furnaces is 78%. AIRFLOW The distribution or movement of air. AIR HANDLER The indoor part of an air conditioner or heat pump that moves cooled or heated air throughout the ductwork of your home. BIOAEROSOLS Microscopic living organisms suspended in the air that grow and multiply in warm, humid places. CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM System in which air is treated at a central location and distributed to and from rooms by one or more fans and a series of ducts. COMPRESSOR The part of the outdoor air conditioner or heat pump that compresses and pumps refrigerant to meet household cooling requirements. Controlled by the thermostat, a compressor is the “heart” of an air conditioning system. It acts as a pump, causing the refrigerant to flow through the system. Its job is to draw in a low-pressure, low-temperature, refrigerant in a gaseous state and by compressing this gas, raise the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. This high-pressure, high-temperature gas then flows to the condenser coil. CONDENSER COIL The outdoor portion of an air conditioner or heat pump that either releases or collects heat, depending on the time of the year. It consists of a series of piping with a fan that draws outside air across the coil. As the refrigerant passes through the condenser coil and the cooler outside air passes across the coil, the air absorbs heat from the refrigerant which causes the refrigerant to condense from a gas to a liquid state. The high-pressure, high-temperature liquid then reaches the expansion valve. DAMPER A moveable plate, located in the ductwork that regulates airflow. Dampers are used to direct air to the areas that need it most. Typically used in a zoning application. dB A decibel is a unit used to measure the relative intensity of sound. DOE The Department of Energy is a federal agency responsible for setting industry efficiency standards and monitoring the consumption of energy sources. DUAL FUEL A comfort system that pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace, providing an energy-efficient alternative to the conventional furnace/air conditioner combination. DUCTWORK The method by which air is channeled from the furnace or the blower coil throughout your home. ENERGY STAR The EPA develops and enforces federal environmental regulations. The EPA oversees the nationwide ENERGY STAR program. EPA The Environmental Protection Agency is a U.S. government organization created to protect human health and the environment EVAPORATOR COIL A series of piping connected to a furnace or air handler that blows indoor air across it, causing the coil to absorb heat from the air. The cooled air is then delivered to the house through the ducts. The refrigerant then flows back to the compressor where the cycle starts over again. EXPANSION VALVE The “brain” of your air conditioning system. By sensing the temperature of the evaporator, or cooling coil, it allows liquid to pass through a very small orifice, which causes the refrigerant to expand to a low-pressure, low-temperature gas. This “cold” refrigerant flows to the evaporator coil. FLUE A flue is a duct or pipe used to exhaust gas to the outdoors. HEAT EXCHANGER Located in the furnace, the heat exchanger transfers heat to the surrounding air, which is then pumped throughout the home. HEAT PUMP A heat pump is an HVAC unit that heats or cools by moving heat. During the winter, a heat pump draws heat from outdoor air and circulates it through your home’s air ducts. In the summer, it reverses the process and removes heat from your house and releases it outdoors. HSPF The Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is the heating efficiency rating for heat pumps. The higher the rating, the more efficient the heat pump. HSPF is regulated at 7.7. HUMIDIFIER An indoor air quality device that introduces moisture to heated air as it passes from the furnace into the ductwork for distribution throughout the home. OUTDOOR COIL See CONDENSER COIL R410A REFRIGERANT A chlorine-free refrigerant that meets the EPA’s newest, most stringent environmental guidelines. REFRIGERANT A chemical that produces a cooling effect while expanding or vaporizing. Most residential air conditioning units contain the standard R22 refrigerant, or Freon. SCROLL COMPRESSOR A specially designed compressor that works in a circular motion, as opposed to up-and-down piston action. SEER The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is an energy efficiency rating for air conditioners. The higher the SEER, the better the energy performance, the more you save. The DOE’s established minimum SEER rating for cooling is 13.00. TWO-STAGE OPERATION Provides two levels of heating or cooling output for greater temperature control, energy efficiency and improved indoor air quality. VARIABLE SPEED MOTOR A motor that automatically adjusts the flow of warm or cool air for ultimate comfort. We will explain what a heat pump is, how your equipment works, energy ratings, new refrigerant, as well as various other topics that tend to be confusing to homeowners. <h2>How does an air conditioner work?</h2> Air conditioning includes both the cooling and heating of air. It also cleans the air and controls moisture levels. An air conditioner is able to cool a building because it removes heat from the indoor air and transfers it outdoors. A chemical refrigerant in the system absorbs the unwanted heat and pumps it through a system of piping to the outside coil. The fan, located in the outside unit, blows outside air over the hot coil, transferring heat from the refrigerant to the outdoor air. Your air conditioning system has four mechanical components – a compressor, an expansion valve, an evaporator coil and blower, and a chemical refrigerant. A central air conditioning unit operates by means of a split system. That is, it consists of a “hot” side, or the condensing unit – including the condensing coil, the compressor, and the fan – which is situated outside your home, and a “cold” side that is located inside your home. The cold side consists of an expansion valve and a cold coil, and it is usually mounted on your furnace or air handler. The furnace blows air through an evaporator coil, which cools the air. Then this cool air is routed throughout your home by means of your duct work. For more information on the compressor, condenser coil, expansion valve, and evaporator coil, see our HVAC terms. <h2>A bigger air conditioner will cool my home better, right?</h2> Wrong! When considering the purchase of a new air conditioner for your home or office, consider the fact that today’s best air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling than air conditioners from the mid-80’s. A larger air conditioner will not necessarily provide the best cooling. Many companies will not spend the time to accurately size your equipment, but it is absolutely critical. A larger air conditioner costs more initially. It will cycle on-and-off more frequently which will drastically lower efficiency. Frequent cycling also causes large temperature swings which decrease your comfort. In humid areas such as the Ohio River Valley, moisture removal is critical. This increase in energy efficiency creates significant environmental benefits as well as important economic benefits. For example, when compared with older, less efficient equipment, air conditioners and heat pumps with higher SEER ratings can save you hundreds of dollars each year on your utility bills. <h2>What can you tell me about air conditioning refrigerants?</h2> Refrigerants are what make air conditioning possible. Indoor air is circulated continuously through the system, so a furnace filter is used to contain dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. <h2>What is a heat pump and how does it work?</h2> A heat pump is an efficient method of cooling your home in the summer and warming it in the winter. It works by moving existing heat from one area to another. A condenser absorbs heat from the outdoor air (even the coldest air contains some heat) and transfers it to an indoor coil.  During the summer, the process is reversed to cool and dehumidify your home. One advantage of a heat pump is that it provides both heating and cooling capabilities in one unit. However, when the temperature drops below the heat pump’s set point, your furnace will take over until the outdoor temperature rises enough for your heat pump to operate more efficiently again. <h2>What is a variable speed furnace or air handler?</h2> Inside your furnace or air handler is an electric motor that drives the indoor blower. In most standard systems, it runs at only one speed – full capacity – and is either on or off. A variable speed motor, however, automatically varies its speed based on your home’s heating and cooling requirements. It ramps up to maximum speed slowly instead of coming on full throttle all at once. This means no more sudden blasts of air – just a gentler, more even airflow. However, in many houses a metal flexible liner must be pulled through your existing chimney. This protects against the flue gases cooling and condensing in the chimney. The water would then seep back into the home and do damage to the plaster.
