After a tour in the U.S. Navy during WWII and graduating from the University of Louisville, Frank H. Arnold, Sr. founded Prudential Heating and Air Conditioning Company on August 1, 1947. Located at 609 S. 3rd Street, Prudential humbly began with a part-time bookkeeper, two mechanics, and one truck. Mr. Arnold believed that by providing quality products combined with a hard-working and honest work ethic, Prudential could become a reliable, service-oriented company for homeowners and businesses in Greater Louisville and Southern Indiana.

Prudential and its employees struggled for a few years trying to build a reputation and earn customer loyalty. With positive attitudes, hard work and dedication, Prudential slowly grew and began serving a larger customer base. In 1954, Prudential began using quality Lennox® products to provide only the best for its customers. Even today, Prudential is a loyal Lennox® dealer.

Soon the company grew and moved to 820 W. Market Street and then again to 305 E. Southern Heights. Frank Arnold believed that promoting growth would allow Prudential to continue to serve customers at the highest level possible.

Prudential moved locations once again to 4724 Allmond Avenue to further facilitate the needs of its customers. Today, Prudential operates a 25,000 square foot office building at 3302 Gilmore Industrial Boulevard including a fully-stocked warehouse and custom sheet metal fabrication shop. Many companies have come and gone, but Prudential has stood the test of time and has consistently proven that it is the premier heating and air conditioning company in Louisville. We have been recognized many times by various respected authorities within the industry and have also received many awards. None of this would be possible without the loyalty of our customers and the satisfaction that we provide to them through hard work, dedication, and quality service and installation.

One of the main things that sets Prudential apart from other companies is the quality of our people. Many of these people have worked for Prudential for many years. We will treat your needs and your home as if they were our own. We will take the time to listen to your needs, review your situation, and share our knowledge and experience with you. It takes some extra time, but we think your comfort and satisfaction is worth it.

Since its beginning, Prudential has been family-owned and operated. Today, Frank Arnold, Jr. and Ron Kramer oversee the operations while continuing the simple and basic philosophy of Complete Customer Satisfaction that Frank Arnold, Sr. established years ago. Frank Arnold, Jr. and Ron Kramer are personally available to all of our customers through telephone, mail, and email everyday.

A dual fuel hybrid system automatically switches between gas and electric depending on which is more efficient at the current outdoor temperature.

Your heat pump will operate just like an air conditioner and cool your home in the summer. It will also serve as your primary heat source in the winter. However, on extra cold days, when your gas furnace would operate more efficiently than your electric heat pump, your furnace becomes your primary heat source.

It will continue to heat your home until the outdoor temperature rises enough for your heat pump to operate more efficiently again.

Refrigerants

As of January 1, 2010, manufacturers are no longer allowed to produce R-22 heating and air conditioning equipment. R-410A is now used as a more efficient and environmentally-friendly alternative to R-22.

In response to international environmental concerns, R-410A was developed as an alternative to R-22, or Freon. R-410A is not damaging to the ozone layer and also allows a higher heat transfer than R-22, resulting in a more efficient operation.

If you still have an R-22 heating and air conditioning product, don't worry - R-22 refrigerant will still be produced until January 1, 2020 to service existing equipment. Due to this lengthy phase out, the transition from R-22 to R-410A should not be an inconvenience, but rather a step toward a healthier environment.

Recovery and Recycling

Prudential realizes the harmful effects that result in releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere; therefore, all of our mechanics use refrigerant recovery machines to recover and reclaim refrigerants.
It's easy for a company to say they offer 24-hour service, but as well all know, saying and doing are completely different. At Prudential we always have a minimum of three technicians on call 24 hours a day. Give us a call when you need us the most, we'll answer!

Our service dispatcher will call you to inform you when a qualified service technician is on his way. Our technicians drive marked Prudential vans and wear Prudential uniforms so you will always know who is coming into your home.
TRAINED PROFESSIONALS

Many of our employees have been with Prudential for many years. We provide ongoing training and maintain an apprentice program to ensure our technicians provide you with only the most quality work. We do this so our technicians can work efficiently and fix the problem correctly - the first time! We do not use subcontractors, so all persons representing Prudential will be actual Prudential employees and provide you with the quality work that you can expect.

CLEANLINESS

Our service technicians wear clean uniforms and shoe covers and use drop cloths, when necessary, to keep your home clean. The service will be performed in a neat and workmanlike manner. We feel as though your home should be cleaner when we leave than when we arrived. We'll treat your home as if it were our own.

COMMUNICATION

When he is finished, the technician will go over an invoice with you to explain what he did as well as go over any additional questions or concerns that you may have. This is a great time to ask questions about our maintenance program or indoor air quality products that can make your home more comfortable. We will keep a copy of your invoice in a file to maintain a maintenance record that is specific to you and your equipment.

OUR PROMISE

From a Prudential Installation (New Construction or Replacement):

ADVANCED SCHEDULING, PROMPT ARRIVAL

Your job will be scheduled in advance and the Prudential crew will be on your job when promised. We will schedule a time that is convenient for you.
ACCURACY

An installation supervisor will check your job before the crew arrives to ensure accuracy and make sure the proper materials needed to complete your job are available.
At Prudential, we take pride in our work and in a job well done. We strive to provide the best service to each and every one of our customers. After all, without them, we could not be in business. Please read the testimonials below from several of our satisfied customers. We also have a profile page on Angie's List that discusses the quality and professionalism with which we perform our job.

“Your service was exceptional. The two men who installed our furnace were great!! They answered all my questions, were friendly and very professional.”
- L.S. Luster 40241

“We are very satisfied with our new zoning system and air filter and the comfort they provide us with in our home. All your employees acted in a professional manner. Thank you.”
- M. Liesinger 40059

“The gentleman who did my duct cleaning did a thorough and great job! He should be rewarded for his performance and for being a perfect gentleman.”
- B. Cooksey 40213

“I called your company for service on July 9th, after recommendations from my parents and in-laws. On July 10th, your technician came out to assess air flow problems in my home. He was very detailed and specific as to what the problems were. We have a new home and have had nothing but problems since we moved in. I just wanted the problems fixed right after 1 ½ years.

On July 19th, your technicians returned in 100 degree heat, in the attic to install elbows and baffles in all the lines. They weren’t real happy about the heat index, but they did it anyway and did a GREAT job.

I just wanted to let you know, I plan on recommending Prudential to anyone who needs service in the future. I am very grateful to your technicians for doing such a great job, so quickly! I had over a dozen visits, by your competitor, to my house before they arrived and said it still wasn’t right. I really appreciate that your guys did it right the first time with a great attitude.

Thanks so much for providing GOOD, QUALITY service to this community!”
- J. Muncy 40299

“When I called for an appointment, the representative I spoke with was knowledgeable, pleasant, and professional. The service technician was on time for the service call and also very pleasant. Even though the work performed was minimal, the technician talked me through the whole process, explaining regular maintenance techniques I should use to prevent future problems. He was prompt, professional, and did the job quickly.”
- Angie’s List User

“Service was efficient and courteous. Work completed expertly. He did not try to upsell me a new air conditioner (which I had feared would happen - mine is probably 30 years old.). He was fair in his pricing for service.”
- Angie’s List User

“The person generating the quote was very knowledgeable and helpful. Their quote was on par with 4 other quotes that I received. The installers came in and were very professional. Extremely happy with the work that they performed.”
- Angie’s List User

“My wife and I were very impressed with them. My wife handled the phone calls and they were very respectful to her. When they came out to our house they showed us what they were doing and gave us tips on what to look for that would be a sign of a problem. Later, we did sign a service contract with them, so that they can service our unit when needed.”
- Angie’s List User

“They are polite and professional and keep my furnace clean and running well. I really like the service agreement that we have with the company because it allows them to come out at least twice a year to make sure my furnace is running well.”
- Angie’s List User

“Prudential has been very good to me. When I first moved into my home, I had a heating and air conditioning unit installed because I had an old unit that needed to be replaced. Being a single woman, I appreciate that they were very courteous and reasonable with me.”
- Angie’s List User

“They were the best group I’ve ever dealt with. They did everything they said they were going to do. They showed up on time, did the job, and cleaned up and left. They did the job in about 6 hours. They were very good.”
- Angie’s List User

“I’m very pleased with them for many reasons. Punctuality, courtesy, quality of work, and the friendliness of the employees is why I decided to sign a maintenance contract with them.”

Too Good To Be True?

Do you ever wonder what the catch is behind a company who offers equipment at an unimaginably low price? Like many things in life, you get what you pay for. This lesser product or service may not be what you really want, or worse, not what you need. These companies operate on the notion that you will settle for less than what you want if you are asked to pay less. Unfortunately there are many ways a company can meet an unrealistic low price:

Offering a lower quality product

Using less experienced personnel or sometimes even subcontractors

Using what they have, not what you actually need

Not providing warranties - labor and/or product warranties

Not being able to respond when you need them the most

Meeting their needs, not yours

You Get What You Pay For

Often times companies will hire low-skilled technicians that do not have the proper training to accurately diagnose your heating and cooling problems. This allows for cheaper service rates. They may just replace parts and components until they find the actual problem, costing you much more money than is necessary. The efficiency of your heating and cooling system depends not only on the equipment itself, but also on the technician servicing and maintaining it. Prudential provides extensive training for our technicians, many of them NATE certified, to ensure you receive proper service the first time, to save you money.

Also, be aware of companies who will offer equipment at a very low price. Often times subcontractors will be hired and then will cut corners during your installation. We guarantee our labor and never hire subcontractors to do any of our work.

Quality Technicians

Prudential maintains more than 20 service technicians, many of which are NATE certified. The technicians drive fully-stocked service vans with GPS systems to allow the technician to get to your home quickly and to prevent having to make multiple trips. Before hiring a technician, Prudential completes a background check, driving record check, and drug screening to ensure that our technicians are professional, courteous, drug-free, and qualified. After all, you wouldn’t invite someone into your home who didn’t meet those qualifications.

There is never a convenient time for your heating or cooling system to have problems. However, our professional technicians are available 24 hours a day to try to make a breakdown as small of an inconvenience to you as possible. Give us a call – we can help!
You wouldn’t buy a new car and never change the oil would you? Neglecting necessary maintenance on your heating and cooling system ensures a steady decline in air conditioning and heating performance while energy use steadily increases. Keeping your system properly maintained will lower energy and repair costs, prevent breakdowns, and prolong the life of your equipment.

The old “out of sight, out of mind” cliché can result in neglected maintenance on your HVAC system. As most people do, you probably take your heating and cooling system for granted, until it fails. This can result in decreased efficiency, higher utility bills, discomfort, the need for premature replacement, and higher repair costs. Getting your heating and cooling system checked twice a year is just as important as getting your car serviced every 3,000 miles!

Prudential’s maintenance agreements are also transferable. Should you decide to sell your home, your maintenance agreement with Prudential will make your home more marketable. Call today to receive a free estimate for your maintenance agreement with Prudential.
Below is a detailed list of the services a qualified technician will perform on your system during a preventative maintenance visit and the benefits you will receive as a result.

According to the EPA, geothermal systems are the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean, and cost effective space conditioning systems available today. Extremely high levels of efficiency are possible because a geothermal heat pump only uses electricity to move heat, not produce it. Geothermal systems transfer heat from your home to the earth in the cooling mode, or from the earth to your home in the heating mode. Water is used as the heat transfer medium through a closed loop piping system buried in the ground. By using this stable thermal source, geothermal heat pumps provide energy efficienct comfort year-round.

Over the years, geothermal systems have been the leader in low operating costs. Recently, however, natural gas prices have begun increasing at a much higher rate than electricity. The U.S. Department of Energy predicts that electricity prices will remain stable over the next twenty years, allowing some increase for inflation.

Geothermal heat pumps qualify for a tax credit worth 30% of the installed cost. Click here to learn more about this tax credit!

Below are a few frequently asked questions aboout geothermal systems. For any other questions or comments, please call us at (502) 966-5813 and we would be happy to talk with you.

What is a geothermal heat pump?

A geothermal or "ground source" heat pump is an electrically-powered device that used the natural heat storage ability of the earth and/or the earth's groundwater to heat and cool your home.

How does it work?

Like any type of heat pump, it simply moves heat energy from one place to another. The geothermal heat pump removes heat energy stored in the earth and/or earth's groundwater and transfers it to the home.

How is heat transferred between the earth and the home?

The earth has the ability to absorb and store heat energy. To use that stored energy, heat is extracted from the earth through a liquid medium and is pumped to the heat pump heat exchanger. There, the heat is used to heat your home. In summer, the process is revered and indoor heat is extracted from your home and transferred to the earth through the liquid.

You mentioned heating and cooling. Does it do both?

One of the things that makes a heat pump so versatile is its ability to be a heating and cooling system in one. You can change from one mode to another with a simple flick of a switch on your indoor thermostat.

Is this new technology?

No, in fact the idea to bury pipe in the ground to gather heat energy began in the 1940s. But it's only been in the last twenty-five years that new heat pump designs have been combined to make geothermal heat pumps the most efficient heating and cooling systems available.

Where is the loop located?

That depends on land availability and terrain. Closed-loops are trenched horizontally in yards adjacent to the home if the yard is large enough. Or, for smaller yards, the loops can be installed vertically using a drill rig, much like a water well installation.

How deep and long will the trenches be?

Trenches are normally four to six feet deep. One of the advantages of a horizontal loop system is being able to lay the trenches according to the shape of the land. As a rule of thumb, 125 to 300 feet of trench are required per ton of heat pump capacity.

How many pipes are in a trench?

Anywhere from 1 to 6 pipes per trench may be used depending upon the optimal design for the yard. More pipe per trench shortens the total amount of trench required.

What about vertical loops?

Holes are bored to about 150 to 300 feet per ton of heat pump capacity. U-shaped loops of pipe are inserted in the holes. The holes are then filled with a grout sealing solution.

How long will the loop pipe last?

Properly installed, these pipes will last over 50 years. They are inert to chemicals normally found in soul and have good heat conducting properties.

How efficient is a geothermal heat pump?

Geothermal heat pumps are 3.5 to 5 times as efficient as the most efficient gas furnace. Instead of burning a combustible fuel to make heat, they simply move heat that already exists. By doing so, they provide 3.5 to 5 units of energy for every unit used to power the heat pump system.

What does a system like this cost?

A system for the typical home will cost more than if you bought a seperate forced-air furnace and central air conditioning system. However, this isn't necessarily comparing "apples to apples." To get an accurate comparison of costs, you need to consider the following:

Payback, or how long it takes to recover the difference in costs between the two systems using energy savings. We would be happy to run a cost comparison and payback analysis report for your specific home.

Energy efficiency of the two systems. To get an accurate picture, make sure efficiency claims are substantiated. Your lifestyle and how well your home is insulated affect how economical any system will be.

Total operating savings from heating and cooling must be combined to get an accurate picture of total energy savings.

Energy costs and availability, both present and future.

System lifespan.

For more information call us today! We would be happy to sit down with you and talk about what all of this means to you. Replacing your heating and air conditioning system is a big decision. You should have all of the facts in front of you when you decide to make an investment in your comfort. We can help you with all of the questions you may have.
Duct Cleaninghttp://www.prudentialhvac.com/site/services/duct-cleaning.html2009-01-26T05:37:46Z
If you need the duct work in your home or office cleaned, we can help.
Call us 24 hours a day - (502) 966-5813.

The duct work in your home or office consists of supply ducts that blow air into rooms, and return ducts that inhale the air in your home or office and suck it back into the blower. The air returning to the blower is filled with dust, pet dander, and many other particles that make your air dirty. When you add the natural moisture that exists within the rooms, allergy-inducing molds, mites, and bacteria are formed. In fact, according to the EPA, the average six-room house collects 40 pounds of dust each year!

Our duct cleaning crews will use specialized tools to remove these particles from within your duct work and promote cleaner air, longer equipment life, and lower energy costs. Also, your registers and vents will be cleaned. Clean HVAC systems perform more efficiently, reducing the need for costly repairs or replacements. Call today for a free, no-obligation written estimate to have your ducts cleaned. If you are a maintenance agreement customer, you will receive a 10% discount on this service.

Why should I have my ducts cleaned?

The average American spends 90% of their time indoors. Breathing clean air can have a major impact on your health. Also, air ducts tend to accumulate dust and other contaminants over a period of years, which can cause your heating and air conditioning equipment to run less efficiently. Duct cleaning will pay for itself in a matter of years through decreased utility bills from increased efficiency. Duct cleaning will remove a substantial amount of this dust and debris from your home, and in some cases, as much as ten pounds may be removed.

How does it work?

Prudential employs highly trained and experienced duct cleaning crews to meet the needs to our customers. When the crew arrives at your home, one of the technicians will walk through your home and count the registers while explaining the process to be used to clean your duct system. All grills and registers inside your home will also be cleaned.

To maintain a healthy environment within your home, Prudential recommends you have your ducts cleaned every 3-5 years. Call today for a free, no-obligation written estimate to have your ducts cleaned.

August 10, 2009 - Flood Damaged Equipment

The recent rain storm caused flood damage over the Greater Louisville area. Floodwaters will cause significant damage to any HVACR equipment which has been submerged. It is important that all electrical and mechanical controls, motors, pumps and valves which have been under water due to flooding MUST BE REPLACED. In particular, fan and limit controls and any other safety devices used in the product, should be replaced. In addition, electrical connections corrode when subjected to water and must be thoroughly check, clean and dry.

The outward appearance of these devices may remain unchanged. When tested, these devices may even appear to be operating properly. Water has a long term corrosive effect on the inner workings of these devices and the continued use after exposure to water poses a safety hazard.

Replacement of these controls is necessary for proper equipment operaton and safety.

The transition from R-22 to R-410A is well underway, spurred on by the fact that as of January 1, 2010, cooling equipment can no longer be manufactured with R-22. Even though that transition is just around the corner, some contractors are still leery of using R-410A. They've heard many rumors surrounding R-410A and have decided to keep using R-22 as long as possible.

Myth: R-410A has not been around very long, so we don't really know how reliable it will be over the long term.

Fact: R-410A has been around since the early 1990s, with the first commercial unit sold in 1996.

Myth: R-410A is expensive, and people don't want to use it until the costs come down.

Fact: R-410A prices are following the laws of supply and demand. Already there have been indication of price levels more in line with R-22. As R-22 phases out and refrigerant manufacturers switch over the majority of their production capacity to R-410A, the price of R-410A should continue to drop, while the price of R-22 is expected to increase.

April 14, 2009 - Cooling Efficiently This Summer

from www.energystar.gov - "Heat & Cool Efficiently"

As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. So making smart decisions about your home's heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on your utility bills - and your comfort. Take the steps to increase the efficiency of your heating and cooling system.

Change your air filter regularly - check your filter every month, especially during heavy use months (winter and summer). If the filter looks dirty after a month, change it. At a minimum, change the filter every three months. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool - wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system - leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure.

Tune up your HVAC equipment yearly - just as a tune-up for your car can improve your gas mileage, a yearly tune-up of your heating and cooling system can improve efficiency and comfort.

Have a programmable thermostat installed - ideal for people who are away from home during set periods of time throughout the week, a programmable thermostat can save you about $180 every year in energy costs.

Have you heating and cooling ducts sealed - ducts that move air to-and-from a forced air furnace, central air conditioner, or heat pump are often big energy wasters. Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20% and sometimes more.

Consider installing ENERGY STAR qualified heating and cooling equipment - if your HVAC equipment is more than 10 years old or not keeping your house comfortable, have it evaluated by Prudential. If it is not performing efficiently or needs upgrading, consider replacing it with a unit that has earned ENERGY STAR.

Ask about proper installation of your equipment - replacing your old heating and cooling equipment with new, energy efficiency models is a great start. But to make sure that you get the best performance, the new equipment must be properly installed. In fact, improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30% - costing you more on your utility bills and possibly shortening the equipment's life.

Proper Refrigerant Charge - a properly charged system will operate more efficiently and help prolong the life of the heating and cooling system. To ensure the system has the correct amount of refrigerant a contractor must test and confirm that the system is properly charged. If the system is not properly charged the contractor should make the appropriate adjustment by adding or removing refrigerant.

Winterize your home now to reduce energy costs later!

With the onset of winter comes cooler temperatures, shorter days and sometimes stronger winds. While this all may be good fun for meteorologists, it can mean stress-inducing utility bills for you.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to take the bite out of the chilly weather and increased energy costs:

Windows

- insulate inside with heavy-duty, clear plastic sheets
- apply caulk to the outside joints to prevent leaks
- close curtains or shades at night and keep them open during the day
- clean windows on the south side of your home to maximize sunlight exposure

Attic and Doors

- check insulation to make sure it meets the levels recommended for Louisville
- close off and weather-strip doors that lead to cold or outside areas
- use draft-stoppers (also called "draft-dodgers" or "draft snakes") to keep heat in and cold out

Plumbing

- wrap and insulate waterlines to prevent them from freezing
- repair leaky faucets immediately and use low-flow showerheads
- when you're away, set thermostats at 55°F or higher to prevent pipes from freezing. If you set them too low, walls can crack and pipes in external walls may freeze

Furnace

- have Prudential inspect you heating system and ducts
- if they can be closed or sealed off, close heating vents in seldom-used rooms
- set your thermostat to 68°F when you're at home and awake and as low as 60°F when you're asleep or away
- clean or replace your furnace filters every month

Hearth

- have a professional chimney sweep check the chimney and flue system for leaks
- keep the flue damper tightly closed when the fireplace is not in use

Water Heater

- insulate the tank and the first six feet of hot and cold water pipes connected to the unit
- lower the temperature to 120°F for every 10-degree decrease in temperature (you may save 3%-5% on your energy costs)
- install heat traps on the hot and cold pipes at the unit to prevent heat loss (some new water heaters have built-in heat traps)
- drain a quart of water from the tank every three months to remove sediment that can hinder the performance and efficiency (be sure to follow the manufacturer's guidelines)

Other Helpful Ideas

- install rubber gaskets behind outlets and use switch plates on exterior walls
- repair damaged wood trim or roof shingles, which can act like a sponge for moisture in the winter
- turn off computers, monitors, copiers, printers and fax machines when not in use

Did You Know?

You could save up to 10% on your energy bill by reducing air leaks in your home. Check the following areas:
- dropped ceiling
- recessed light
- attic entrance
- sill plates
- water and furnace flues
- all ducts
- doorframes
- chimney flashing
- window frames
- electrical outlets and switches
- plumbing and utility access

Lennox Solutions

Dual-Fuel Heating
For maximum energy savings year-round, you may want to consider a dual-fuel system which pairs a heat pump with a high-efficiency gas furnace.

With this dual-fuel option, both systems work to meet household heating demands, but never at the same time. Each system operates when it is the most cost effective. The heat pump - an all-in-one heating and cooling system - acts as the primary heating system. But, when the weather becomes too cold for the heat pump to operate efficiently, the furnace provides the extra power you need to stay warm!
System in which air is treated at a central location and distributed to and from rooms by one or more fans and a series of ducts.

COMPRESSOR
The part of the outdoor air conditioner or heat pump that compresses and pumps refrigerant to meet household cooling requirements. Controlled by the thermostat, a compressor is the “heart” of an air conditioning system. It acts as a pump, causing the refrigerant to flow through the system. Its job is to draw in a low-pressure, low-temperature, refrigerant in a gaseous state and by compressing this gas, raise the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. This high-pressure, high-temperature gas then flows to the condenser coil.

CONDENSER COIL
The outdoor portion of an air conditioner or heat pump that either releases or collects heat, depending on the time of the year. It consists of a series of piping with a fan that draws outside air across the coil. As the refrigerant passes through the condenser coil and the cooler outside air passes across the coil, the air absorbs heat from the refrigerant which causes the refrigerant to condense from a gas to a liquid state. The high-pressure, high-temperature liquid then reaches the expansion valve.

DAMPER
A moveable plate, located in the ductwork that regulates airflow. Dampers are used to direct air to the areas that need it most. Typically used in a zoning application.
EVAPORATOR COIL
A series of piping connected to a furnace or air handler that blows indoor air across it, causing the coil to absorb heat from the air. The cooled air is then delivered to the house through the ducts. The refrigerant then flows back to the compressor where the cycle starts over again.

EXPANSION VALVE
The “brain” of your air conditioning system. By sensing the temperature of the evaporator, or cooling coil, it allows liquid to pass through a very small orifice, which causes the refrigerant to expand to a low-pressure, low-temperature gas. This “cold” refrigerant flows to the evaporator coil.

Frequently Asked Questionshttp://www.prudentialhvac.com/site/tips-and-tools/frequently-asked-questions.html2009-02-19T10:47:11Z

Here you will find information that should help to answer some questions that you may have concerning heating and air conditioning in your home or office. We will explain what a heat pump is, how your equipment works, energy ratings, new refrigerant, as well as various other topics that tend to be confusing to homeowners.

How does an air conditioner work?

Air conditioning includes both the cooling and heating of air. It also cleans the air and controls moisture levels. An air conditioner is able to cool a building because it removes heat from the indoor air and transfers it outdoors. A chemical refrigerant in the system absorbs the unwanted heat and pumps it through a system of piping to the outside coil. The fan, located in the outside unit, blows outside air over the hot coil, transferring heat from the refrigerant to the outdoor air.

Your air conditioning system has four mechanical components – a compressor, an expansion valve, an evaporator coil and blower, and a chemical refrigerant. A central air conditioning unit operates by means of a split system. That is, it consists of a “hot” side, or the condensing unit – including the condensing coil, the compressor, and the fan – which is situated outside your home, and a “cold” side that is located inside your home. The cold side consists of an expansion valve and a cold coil, and it is usually mounted on your furnace or air handler. The furnace blows air through an evaporator coil, which cools the air. Then this cool air is routed throughout your home by means of your duct work. For more information on the compressor, condenser coil, expansion valve, and evaporator coil, see our HVAC terms.

A bigger air conditioner will cool my home better, right?

Wrong! When considering the purchase of a new air conditioner for your home or office, consider the fact that today’s best air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling than air conditioners from the mid-80’s. A larger air conditioner will not necessarily provide the best cooling. Many companies will not spend the time to accurately size your equipment, but it is absolutely critical. A larger air conditioner costs more initially. It will cycle on-and-off more frequently which will drastically lower efficiency. Frequent cycling also causes large temperature swings which decrease your comfort. In humid areas such as the Ohio River Valley, moisture removal is critical. Excessive cycling reduces moisture removal and wears out parts and components much more quickly. When all of these factors are combined, it means more electricity usage and shorter equipment life, which costs you more money.

What are the benefits of two-stage cooling?

Two-stage cooling means the air conditioner or heat pump has a compressor with two levels of operation: high for hot summer days and low for milder days. Since the low setting is adequate to meet household cooling demands 80% of the time, a two-stage unit runs for longer periods and produces more even temperatures. Longer cooling cycles also translate to quieter more efficient operation and enhanced humidity control. As an added benefit, many two-stage compressors use the new R410A refrigerant, which meets US government standard for environmental safety.

When replacing the outdoor unit of an air conditioner or heat pump, should the indoor unit also be replaced?

We highly recommend it; here are the reasons why! All outdoor air conditioning and heat pump units are specifically designed to work with matched indoor units for optimum efficiency and performance. While new air conditioner or heat pump units may “work” with your existing indoor unit, the result is a definite compromise in system performance. The cooling and/or heating efficiency ratings that are advertised for an air conditioner or heat pump are based on their performance as part of a matched system. Longer equipment life will likely also result because all components operate as they we designed to. At first glance, replacing only the outdoor unit may appear to be a bargain, but decreased efficiency and reliability is not such a bargain after all. Replacing an entire air conditioning or heat pump system costs more initially, but you get more efficiency, reliability, and comfort in the long run.

Should I be concerned about the new energy efficiency standards?

Federal regulation has raised the energy efficiency standards for air conditioners and heat pumps. A minimum of 13 SEER is required for air conditioners and 13 SEER/7.7 HSPF for heat pumps. Previously, ratings were only required to meet 10 SEER. This increase in energy efficiency creates significant environmental benefits as well as important economic benefits. For example, when compared with older, less efficient equipment, air conditioners and heat pumps with higher SEER ratings can save you hundreds of dollars each year on your utility bills.

What can you tell me about air conditioning refrigerants?

Refrigerants are what make air conditioning possible. Contained within the coils of your system, these agents make it possible to cool and dehumidify indoor air. Today, there are several types of refrigerants used in air conditioning systems. The most common is R22, which will be phased out over the coming years in response to international environmental concerns. Though the transition away from R22 is just beginning, Prudential and Lennox are one step ahead by offering a full line of products that use a more responsible, chlorine-free refrigerant, R410A. R410A is better suited for use in higher-efficiency equipment because you get a higher heat transfer rate than with R22.

How does a furnace work?

A furnace works by drawing air inside a heat exchanger, where it is warmed with a flame of natural gas. A blower sends the warm air through the house via your metal ducts. It enters the room through a register in the floor or wall. Indoor air is circulated continuously through the system, so a furnace filter is used to contain dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.

What is a heat pump and how does it work?

A heat pump is an efficient method of cooling your home in the summer and warming it in the winter. It works by moving existing heat from one area to another. A condenser absorbs heat from the outdoor air (even the coldest air contains some heat) and transfers it to an indoor coil. During the summer, the process is reversed to cool and dehumidify your home. One advantage of a heat pump is that it provides both heating and cooling capabilities in one unit. Like a furnace, they use filters to reduce airborne particles and keep the unit clean.

What is a dual fuel system?

A dual fuel system combines your electric heat pump with your indoor gas furnace to share the heating load of your home. Each system will operate when it is the most cost effective heating method. In the summer, your heat pump will cool your home. It will also serve as your primary heat source in the winter. However, when the temperature drops below the heat pump’s set point, your furnace will take over until the outdoor temperature rises enough for your heat pump to operate more efficiently again.

What is a variable speed furnace or air handler?

Inside your furnace or air handler is an electric motor that drives the indoor blower. In most standard systems, it runs at only one speed – full capacity – and is either on or off. A variable speed motor, however, automatically varies its speed based on your home’s heating and cooling requirements. It ramps up to maximum speed slowly instead of coming on full throttle all at once. This means no more sudden blasts of air – just a gentler, more even airflow. Also, since it runs as a lower speed most of the time, there is a lot less noise and cost to operate.

What are furnace energy ratings?

Furnaces are rated by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratio, which is the percent of heat produced for every dollar of fuel consumed. AFUE works a lot like the miles-per-gallon rating on your car – the higher the rating, the lower your fuel costs. All furnaces manufactured today must have an AFUE ratio of at least 78%. If your furnace is 10-15 years old, it very well may fall below the current furnace minimum and waste energy.

What’s the advantage of two-stage heating?

Traditional furnaces are designed to operate only at one level – high. No matter what the temperature is outside, they run at full capacity. Furnaces with advanced two-stage technology make the distinction between mild and extreme weather, delivering the level of heating output necessary to maintain optimal comfort conditions inside your home. The first stage operates the furnace at about 68% of its heating capacity. Your furnace will adjust automatically should the outdoor temperature drop and switch to the second stage to meet the comfort demands of your home. It’s like having two furnaces for the price of one, and you don’t have the hassle of constantly adjusting your thermostat. A two-stage furnace can provide optimal comfort within your home, despite the changing weather conditions outside. If you want and expect high-level performance from your home comfort equipment, then a Lennox two-stage furnace is the right choice for you.

Why should I zone my house?

To keep all areas of your home comfortable, no matter what the weather! No longer must you have hot or cold rooms, or pay to heat or cool areas of your home that you rarely use. Zoning has come a long way in recent years, and it is now efficient, easy to install and flexible enough for any home.

Why should I choose Lennox products?

Lennox has long enjoyed a reputation for having the best products and services in the industry. This reputation was earned over time because of the high levels of quality in product design. For over 100 years, Lennox has helped keep homes and businesses comfortable. This stability ensures they will stand behind their products. Lennox products have always led the way in design and performance innovation. When you see the Lennox label, you know you’re getting the finest, most innovative heating, cooling and indoor air quality products available that will provide exceptional performance and reliability.

Why should I choose an ENERGY STAR product for my home?

ENERGY STAR is a U.S. government-sponsored program that helps businesses and homeowners save energy and protect the environment by giving them the information they need to make smart choices about efficiency. One of the strongest reasons for choosing an ENERGY-STAR labeled product over a conventional model is that it can deliver significant savings. ENERGY STAR equipment can reduce your heating costs by as much as 40% and cooling costs up to 50%. By creating a more efficient home environment, you are contributing to a cleaner global environment. According to the EPA, if just one in ten households installed ENERGY STAR heating and cooling products, the change would keep more than 17 billion pounds of pollution out of the air.

What are the 90%+ AFUE Gas Furnaces?

(The G71P, G61V, G61, G51, G43 models)
These furnaces have an AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating greater than 90%. That means that you will receive more than 90 cents of heat for every dollar that you spend on gas. They are all condensing furnaces which means there is water in the flue gases. In all cases the flue gases must be exhausted through a white plastic (PVC) pipe, typically to the side or rear of the house. This type of furnace should show average savings of 25% to 40% depending on the type of furnace you are replacing. A homeowner with a large old house, high gas bills, or one who plans on being in the home at least 10 years is a good candidate for one of the 90%+ furnaces. With lifetime warranties on the heat exchanger (with the exception of the G43 which has a 20 year warranty), they are units that will provide years of dependable satisfaction.

What are the 80%+ AFUE Gas Furnaces?

(The G60V, G60, G50, G40 models)
The AFUE on these furnaces is 80%. The flue gases exhaust at a higher temperature than the 90% furnace, therefore it can be vented through most chimneys. However, in many houses a metal flexible liner must be pulled through your existing chimney. This protects against the flue gases cooling and condensing in the chimney. The water would then seep back into the home and do damage to the plaster. A homeowner with a small house and small gas bills, or someone who is not going to live in the home for more than 5 years would likely choose this model. These models carry a 20 year limited warranty on the heat exchanger and will provide average savings of 15% to 25% depending on the type and age of furnace you are replacing.

Why is ventilation important for proper indoor air quality?

We were once able to achieve natural ventilation in our homes by merely opening a window. However, with the concern for energy efficiency, we have been busy making homes “tighter” from an energy standpoint. With HRV’s (heat recovery ventilators) and ERV’s (energy recovery ventilators), air can be circulated throughout your home using your existing forced air system. Bringing fresh air into your home could help reduce concentrations of indoor contaminants. With these innovative products, you can get fresh air and still maintain energy efficiency in your home.
How to Choose an HVAC Contractorhttp://www.prudentialhvac.com/site/tips-and-tools/how-to-choose-an-hvac-contractor.html2009-05-12T10:43:59Z

CONSEQUENCES OF CHOOSING THE WRONG CONTRACTOR

1. Frequent System Breakdowns

We hire quality technicians so that we can get the job done right, the first time!

2. Improper Installations

Bad installations can cost you more money on your utility bills and increase the likelihood of a breakdown.

3. Unsafe / Inefficient Operation

If all connections are not sealed correctly, you will spend more money on your utility bills and more importantly run the risk of having dangerous liquids and gases enter your home.

4. Shortened Equipment Life

Equipment that is not installed correctly will decrease the efficiency and life of your heating and air conditioning equipment.

5. Lack of Timely Service

During the extreme cold winter months and hot summer months, the service schedules of smaller companies fill up fast. Many times they will be unable to get to your home or office at all. Prudential maintains over 20 technicians equipped with GPS systems to get to your home or office as quickly as possible.

6. Unusually High Utility Bills

Do you wonder what the catch is behind a company who offers equipment or service at an unimaginably low price? Like many things in life, you get what you pay for. Many times when you are offered a low price, you are provided an unprofessional service. This can lead to improper installations, bad connections, or even subcontractors performing your job. All of these things lead to higher utility bills, which will cost you more money in the long run.

7. Building Code Infractions

Unqualified technicians that provide low labor rates will often times perform your job not in accordance with current building codes. When it comes time to sell your home, you may have to pay to bring these infractions up to code. Prudential will always check to make sure all of our work is done according to the building codes, and state and federal regulations.

A heating, ventilating and air conditioning system is designed to suit your needs. Your contractor selects each part of the system individually so that everything works at top efficiency to provide the comfort you need. All the system components are matched with the furnace, the condensing unit, fans and blowers, air conditioning coil and the duct work to produce a heating and cooling system that will work best for you.

A quality contractor listens to your problems and cares about your comfort while attempting to find out if any rooms are too drafty or dry during the winter or too hot or damp in the summer.

A quality contractor can help determine if your home or building is prone to indoor air pollution problems which can be caused by organic resins or vapors, poor air turnover or high humidity. If allergies are a problem, a quality contractor can service your heating and air conditioning system and recommend system accessories that may prevent conditions that adversely affect health and comfort.

A quality contractor is concerned about protecting the environment. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) and hydrochlorocarbons (HCFC's) used as air conditioning and heat pump refrigerant have been linked to the destruction of the earth's ozone layer. A quality contractor won't release the refrigerant into the atmosphere and is trained and certified in the proper techniques for recovering, recycling, reclaiming and disposing of used refrigerant.

A quality contractor will show you how to care for your system on a day-to-day basis. For example, how to change the filter in your furnace and how to operate your thermostat. He or she will advise you about symptoms which could signal that there might be a problem with the equipment. After servicing your equipment, he or she will let you know when it should be serviced again.

If a new system is necessary, a quality contractor will perform a Manual J® load calculation and explain any changes which might be necessary in your duct system and present options to help you make the best decision regarding the replacement of your old system.

A quality contractor offer planned preventative maintenance service to maximize the life and efficiency of your equipment. A quality contractor honors the terms of the warranty on the equipment throughout the warranty period.

A quality contractor does not offer price as the only consideration. While it is a major factor, there often are valid reasons for price differences.

A quality contractor will follow up with you to make certain that you are satisfied with the service and with your new system.
Partners and Suppliershttp://www.prudentialhvac.com/site/tips-and-tools/partners-and-suppliers.html2009-09-28T13:57:24Z

Prudential offers high quality Lennox® products. We also employ over 600 years of collective experience in the heating and air conditioning industry, all right here in your community. As you have often heard, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. At Prudential, all of our work is performed by Prudential employees. We want you to have what you want, not what we think you want. If we meet your needs and your wants, we have done our job. At Prudential, we provide you with the best possible product using the best available resources and personnel at the best possible price. Ask your friends and family and we think they’ll agree that picking Prudential is picking the best. Call us today!

If needed, you will receive emergency service on nights, weekends, and holidays at a discounted rate. We are available 24 hours a day to better serve your needs.

You will receive

10% discount on repair parts

10% discount on heating, cooling, and indoor air quality equipment

10% discount on any additional services that may be wanted or required

We will call you twice a year to schedule your maintenance service so you have one less thing to worry about.

This is an overview of our maintenance program. Please see contract for full terms and conditions.

March 26, 2009 - Stimulus Bill and Tax Credits

Welcome to our What's New page. We will update this page regularly to keep you informed on the most up-to-date happenings in our business. Enjoy!

On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed a stimulus bill (The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) that made some significant changes to the energy efficiency tax credits. The highlights are:

The tax credits that were previously effective for 2009, have been extended to 2010 as well.

The tax credit has been raised from 10% to 30%.

The tax credits that were for a specific dollar amount (ex: $300 for an air conditioner) have been converted to 30% of the cost.

The maximum credit has been raised from $500 to $1,500 for the two years (2009-2010). Some improvements such as solar panels are not subject to the $1,500 limit. Prudential is now offering the industry's first solar-assisted central heat pump.

Specific air conditioners, heat pumps and gas furnaces offered by Prudential are covered by the tax credit in 2009 and 2010. Central air conditioners must be greater than or equal to 16 SEER and 13 EER. Air source heat pumps must be greater than or equal to 15 SEER, 12.5 EER and 8.5 HSPF. Natural gas furnaces must be 95% or greater AFUE.
