Getting Started with Indoor Air Quality Products
What is Indoor Air Quality?
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is an issue of growing concern and visibility. Due to improved insulation and tighter construction, poor air circulation exists within homes and other buildings. Contaminated air is trapped in while clean outdoor air is kept out. In fact, indoor air can be up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air.Indoor air quality uses humidification, dehumidification, filtration, germicidal (UV) lights, and ventilation to improve the quality of your indoor air. With people spending 80-90% of their time indoors and over 50% of illnesses being directly related to the air we breathe, doesn’t it make sense to do something about your indoor air quality?
The air outside is naturally cleaned by rain, snow, trees, and wind among other things. Inside we have to rely on the filtering mechanisms in our HVAC systems. Much of the ductwork contains layers of dust, dirt, and other debris. This is the perfect breeding ground for dust mites, mold, spores, and other organic materials that, when we breathe, can cause many problems. The simple solution is to remove the dirt from our system.
There are a number of ways Prudential can help you with these issues; a few of the most common are listed below. Why should Indoor Air Quality matter to me and my family?
Your Health and Money-Saving Efficiency.Your Health
Indoor air has been found to be up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. Most commonly purchased fiberglass filters are only 7% efficient in stopping dust, dirt and pollen, letting 93% of the pollutants pass through them. This dust, dirt, and pollen can lead to and aggravate allergies and other illnesses. Children are more likely than adults to be affected by polluted indoor air because they breathe faster, inhale more air per unit of body weight and are closer to the ground where concentrations are higher. The elderly, asthmatics, and people with breathing problems, allergies and lung disease are also likely to be more sensitive to pollutants. Medical and environmental experts have ranked poor indoor air quality as one of the highest risks to human health among all types of environmental problems.
Money-Saving Efficiency
Clean heating and cooling systems maintain their heating and cooling capacity and run less. This saves you money on your monthly energy bills. In fact, a buildup of .042 inches of dirt on a heating or cooling coil can result in a decrease in efficiency of 21%. This decrease in efficiency may just cost you more money, but it could cause a system failure which will be much more costly. 9 out of 10 heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system failures are caused by dirt and dust. Can you afford not to invest in Indoor Air Quality equipment?
