Germicidal Lights
Germicidal lights, or UV lights, are becoming more and more common. In fact, the United States government mandates that germicidal lights be installed above air conditioning coils in all new government buildings. UV lights are installed above your air conditioner or heat pump coil. They work by sterilizing the illuminated surface inhibiting mold growth on coils. By inhibiting mold growth, UV lights will improve your air quality and protect your equipment.
Your coil is designed to cool the air passing through it to generate comfortable air for your home. During this process, dehumidification also occurs as water condenses from the air stream onto the cooling coil. This water, referred to as condensate, drains away from the coil into the drain pan and through the drain connection on the side of your furnace or air handler. This moisture provides a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Germicidal lights use UVC spectrum light to kill mold and bacteria growing on your coil by breaking down their DNA. When combined with an electronic air cleaner or high-efficiency air filter, germicidal lights can make your home much safer to breathe in!
